Windy & Carl’s music is like a corona of light surrounding an eclipsed pop song, as if they took the sound of their favorite artists on 4AD (Cocteau Twins, Slowdive) and blotted out everything but the frayed edges, where distortion and feedback reside. Like SOTL, Windy & Carl started out with 4-track recordings that they made themselves and they eventually signed with Kranky, where they released a run of classic drone records.

Like another married and long-running team, Yo La Tengo's Georgia Hubley and Ira Kaplan, Windy & Carl's focus on craft means they can be trusted to continually improve. The Michigan-based duo have been working with shoegaze, dream pop, and ambient music for many years, and their mastery sounds effortless. Maybe it has something to do with working with a spouse-- there's always someone around to call you on your bullshit. Intimacy whittles away at the ego-driven blind spots where poor artistic decisions happen. It's like working with a mirror. You can't fool yourself.

The Garment District (thegarmentdistrict.com) is a Psychedelic pop project led by multi-instrumentalist Jennifer Baron, a founding member of Brooklyn's The Ladybug Transistor (Merge Records, Happy Happy Birthday to Me Records),with a close constellation of friends and family creating the group's kaleidoscopic sound. For the Tech 25 show, The Garment District will draw from some material not previously performed live before, including some ambient and experimental pieces. Their set will be accompanied by visuals created by Pittsburgh artist Johnny Arlett. The Garment District's latest full-length album, "Flowers Telegraphed to All Parts of the World," is available on orange vinyl (pressed by Third Man Records) and digitally via Happy Happy Birthday to Me Records (Athens, Georgia). Soon the band plans to head into the studio to start working on a new album.
